    Driven Renaut Duster, comparing with Linea

    Although this may not be a correct comparison as the two cars (duster and linea) are from different sectors altogether.

    But here's how it happened.

    A friend had been looking for a car. And Duster had good reviews, so we went and checked the duster. Its a a very good looking car and it has a lot of presence. I would say that its a very practical car. Very good for indian driving conditions. But the moment you see the price of the top end version in Delhi. . Suddenly things dont look so good. It is 13+ lacs on road in delhi. Now when you look at the car. . It suddenly does not appera very good, considering that my Palio D with its beige and black combination feels better in terms of interiors.. And the overall fit and finish is better in my palio. The drive on the duster was very silent, though i feel that once you sit atop those large wheels and humungous body, you need grunt. That i feel the duster lacks. I am not saying that it is under powered. . It is reasonably powered but you could say that i am spoilt by the "GTX" and The sheer practicality of the "1.9 D"...

    Now I suggest to my friend to look at the linea and she simply does not want to drive a "fiat".. and I convinced her to take a test drive.
    The linea we tested was the top end diesel. . At 9.3 lacs, it just blows the duster out of the window.. Trust me the car feels much much much better in every respect.
    And I am not discounting the it as it is a "car"... Trust me it has the sturdiness to challenge the duster. Although the engine is very boomy in the linea.. My 1.9 D does not boom that much..

    But in my humble opinion, one looking at the duster should seriously consider the "linea" and s/he wont be disappointed.

    MN Sir, just a correction here. Old Lineas Kerb weight was 1291kg (pre-June 2010). Now, the kerb weight for MJD is 1210 and for Fire it is 1180. Our Linea MJD is indeed lighter than the korean hatch i20 CRDI which weighs 1222kgs.

    Coming back to Duster, it is not a bad vehicle at all. I checked out this vehicle in person at a show in EA sometime back. The front view actually stunned me. I sat inside the car and did not feel that it is an SUV. For me, it felt more like a Sedan with tall stance. The vehicle is good but, renault screwed up with the pricing. The 85 hp base version of Duster costs 9.4L OTR in Chennai. For this price, Linea MJD Dynamic can be bought with all the top-end features.

    For the record, Duster is available in 2 Diesel variants. One in 85 hp and another in 110 hp. The top-end 110 hp in Chennai costs 13.71 OTR.

    Some pics that I clicked when I checked out the Duster.

    I was getting curious with the numbers MN posted ..

    In the power Department. BHP/ TON

    Duster uses the 1.5 litre engine from Renault
    Base Duster - 83.8/1758 = 47.66 bhp per ton
    Most Powerful Duster - 110 /1758 = 62.71 bhp per ton.

    Linea -- 1.3 liter Mjet.

    Linea - 92 / 1210 = 75 bhp per ton ..

    Weight difference between the two ---> 1758 - 1210 = 548 kilos .

    Now Throw In 5 adults in a linea and 100 + kgs of lugguage ---> 85 kgs X 5 adults + 110 kgs of luggage = 548 kilos.

    In theory .. A linea with 5 passengers and lugguage would be still more powerful than Base Duster !!!!

    Sujit, you got it wrong. The weight you used for Duster is the gross vehicle weight, not the kerb weight. The Kerb weight of Duster is 1308 kgs.

    Thanks Ramesh ..

    Ahh there it is .. my bad.. And all the while I was thinking , is this correct (my calculation).

    And Yes . I did not know the Curb Weight and Gross Weight.
    Curb Weight is the actual weight of the truck without any passengers or cargo in it. It’s the base weight that is used in subtraction to calculate the total weight of the vehicle with passengers and cargo.

    Gross Vehicle Weight is the total weight of the loaded vehicle. This includes the vehicle itself and the cargo that is loaded within that vehicle.

    I wouldn't give too much for the quoted figures. When I had my Fiat Panda recently on the the corner weights (they are for race set up and very accurate) it was 50kg heavier than quoted. My Punto Mk2 was 60kg heavier than quoted. The last Seicentos were 110kg heavier than quoted.

    Very rarely the quoted figures are accurate.

    13L is too high. The only advantage may be we are getting a smaller engine with better FE compared to other SUVs.

    The already over priced product now becomes super expensive. But, still it is VFM to some section of the people. I pity for them.

    http://articles.economictimes.indiat...petrol-variant

    The bare bone 85ps base version of Duster costed Rs. 8.13L ex-showroom Chennai (9.4L OTR). Now, it is 8.53L Ex-showrroom, which mean it would cost Rs. 10L OTR.
